What Organizing and Weight Loss Have in Common
Below is an email that I wrote last April to be sent out from Tall Trainer Fitness Systems to their email list.

While chatting with my Dad recently about my business, he mentioned something that really stuck with me: weight loss and organizing share a lot of the same principles. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how true that is. So let’s dig into these parallels.
At Tall Trainer, we’re taught that the foundation of a good workout is built in a very specific order: Posture, Range of Motion, Adding Resistance. Each element builds on the one before it, and skipping ahead can lead to frustration—or even injury.
Organizing follows a similar path.
Mindset
Just like posture sets the foundation for safe movement, your mindset is the foundation for organizing. You have to be mentally ready to make a change. When you're truly committed, every decision that follows is grounded in your desire for a calmer, more supportive home.Sort and Explore
Once your mindset is aligned, it’s time to take action: start sorting. This is like exploring your range of motion. You're moving things around, discovering what you own, and learning where your limits are. It's an active process of seeing and understanding.Make Decisions
This is your “adding weight” moment. Decluttering requires making decisions and sometimes they are tough ones. But it’s this step that truly leads to change. It’s where you start to feel the transformation take root.
Building Your “Decluttering Muscles”
At the beginning of a new workout routine, your muscles feel sore, you might feel self-conscious, and everything feels a bit awkward. But over time, as you show up consistently, you build strength and confidence. The same weight becomes easier to lift.
It’s the same with organizing and decluttering. At first, making decisions (especially emotional ones) can be really hard. But the more you practice, the stronger your “declutter muscles” become. What once felt overwhelming starts to feel manageable. Eventually, you’re able to make decisions with clarity and confidence.
Let’s Talk Intake
Another strong parallel between weight loss and organizing? What’s coming in.
With weight loss, tracking calories can have a bigger impact than simply trying to exercise off every indulgence. Likewise, in organizing, many people focus only on decluttering or what’s going out. But if you’re still bringing the same volume of items into your home, you’ll never get ahead.
Decluttering alone won’t solve the problem. You need to be just as intentional about what you bring in as what you take out. That’s how you gain lasting control over clutter and finally create the peace you’re craving.
In the End, It’s About Choosing Yourself
Whether it’s working out or decluttering, both acts send a powerful message: I matter. I deserve to feel better. I deserve to live in a body, and a home that supports me.
It’s not always easy. But taking that first step, even when it feels uncomfortable, can completely change your life.
